The ancient village of Carate Urio is a municipality in the Province of Como, which is located in the Italian region of Lombardy. The commune lies on the north western shore of Lake Como and is made up of two distinct areas; Urio and Carate Lario.
The village still retains all it's old world charm today, which is evident from the century old houses that are surrounded by stepped lanes and crossed by low bridges. Roman remains and Gallic tombs have been found in this area which denote it's ancient origins. The village has some good restaurants where you will be able to sample the local cuisine, there is also a small grocery shop, a post office, bank and a pharmacy. Should you need a larger selection of shops, then it will be worth a visit to either Cernobbio or Como. There is a boat stop in the village with frequent services to Como and Bellagio. There are two Churches in the area, the parish Church of SS. Quirico e Giulitta which was rebuilt in 1865, the bell tower is twelfth century and still remains from the original building. Also, the Church of S. Marta which dates back from the eleventh century has several ancient frescoes. | |
